Sunchang Jangryu Festival 2026 is one of Korea’s most interesting autumn events for travelers who want to understand the country’s traditional fermented sauces beyond simply tasting gochujang in a restaurant.
Venue: Sunchang Traditional Gochujang Folk Village and Fermentation Theme Park, Sunchang, Jeonbuk State.
Theme: Korean jang culture, including gochujang and doenjang.
Best for: food travelers, traditional culture and hands-on experiences.
Why Sunchang is famous for jang
Sunchang is strongly associated with gochujang and other traditional fermented pastes. The festival celebrates the broader Korean tradition of making jang, including gochujang and doenjang, rather than treating chili paste as a single commercial product.
The tradition of knowledge, beliefs and practices related to jang-making in Korea is recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. For international visitors, Sunchang offers a useful way to connect that living food tradition with the ingredients and flavors encountered throughout a Korea trip.
What happens at the 2026 festival?
According to VISITKOREA’s current 2026 festival information, the event runs from October 15 through October 18. Highlights include jang-making experiences and a reenactment of a royal tribute procession, combining food culture with historical interpretation.
Learn how Korean fermented pastes are made
Hands-on programs are especially valuable because they show that jang is the result of ingredients, fermentation, time and household knowledge. Program times and participation conditions may change, so check the current schedule shortly before visiting.
Taste Sunchang gochujang and local food
Food is naturally a major reason to visit. Rather than assuming every red paste tastes the same, compare sweetness, saltiness, heat and fermentation character. Travelers with allergies should ask about ingredients before tasting.
See the cultural side of fermentation
The festival is not only about eating. Traditional performances and the royal tribute procession theme help explain how regional food specialties became connected to Korean history and identity.
Where is the festival, and how do you get there?
The festival uses the Traditional Gochujang Folk Village and Fermentation Theme Park. The organizer’s directions page gives 55 Jangnyu-ro, Sunchang-eup, Sunchang-gun (순창군 순창읍 장류로 55) as the destination.
For a rail approach, the organizer currently lists a free Namwon Station–festival shuttle every 30 minutes: departures from Namwon Station are shown as 08:30–20:00, with festival-to-station services 08:30–21:30. Check the published shuttle page again before booking because the organizer says times and operating arrangements can change. Leave a buffer between the shuttle and your reserved train.
Allow at least half a day at the festival for an activity, food and a walk through the venue.
Practical tips
Pick a jang-making session from the organizer’s current program and confirm whether it requires a reservation or fee before building your day around it. Ask about ingredients when tasting unfamiliar pastes.
For the intercity leg, use our train-booking guide. If extending the trip within Jeonbuk, the Jeonju bibimbap guide offers a separate food stop; allow a transfer and avoid scheduling it immediately before your return train.
Is Sunchang Jangryu Festival worth visiting?
For travelers interested in Korean cuisine, yes. Kimchi may be Korea’s best-known fermented food internationally, but jang is equally important to the flavor foundation of many Korean dishes. Sunchang gives visitors a chance to understand that tradition in the region most closely associated with gochujang.
