Foreign visitors planning several intercity train rides now have two related products to understand: the KORAIL PASS for rail travel and KORAIL PASS Plus, which adds a rechargeable public-transport card function. KORAIL launched the integrated product for foreign visitors at the end of 2025, so it is relevant for 2026 trips that combine KTX with city buses and subways.

The important distinction is simple: the extra KRW 8,000 is for the physical transit-card function. It does not mean your subway and bus rides become unlimited. You still load money onto that prepaid transport balance.

2026 KORAIL PASS adult prices

Pass Adult price
2-day select pass KRW 131,000
3-day select pass KRW 186,000
4-day select pass KRW 234,000
5-day select pass KRW 275,000

These prices are shown on KORAIL’s current English pass guide and are also listed in KORAIL’s official announcement for KORAIL PASS Plus. The select-pass format lets you choose the permitted travel days within the pass window according to the current product rules.

What the Plus upgrade adds

KORAIL’s official announcement says that after buying a KORAIL PASS, foreign visitors can pay an additional KRW 8,000 for the integrated transit-card service. The prepaid card can be topped up for nationwide subways and buses and can also be used at supported offline merchants.

The card is collected from dedicated kiosks at locations KORAIL lists including Incheon International Airport and major KTX stations such as Seoul, Busan, Dongdaegu and Daejeon.

Do you still need to reserve KTX seats?

Yes. A rail pass is not the same as automatically owning a reserved seat on every train. KORAIL’s English FAQ tells pass holders to find the pass under MY TICKET and use the SEAT RESERVATION button. Reserve important long-distance trains as soon as your schedule is firm, especially around weekends and holidays.

How to use it step by step

  1. Buy the KORAIL PASS from KORAIL’s website, a designated sales channel or a KORAIL Travel Center.
  2. If you want the integrated local-transit card, apply for KORAIL PASS Plus with your pass number and pay the KRW 8,000 add-on.
  3. Collect the physical card at a supported kiosk.
  4. Register or confirm your pass starting date according to the current pass rules.
  5. Reserve seats for KTX and other trains where you want a guaranteed seat.
  6. Top up the prepaid transit balance separately for subway and bus use.

When the pass can make sense

Do not buy a rail pass simply because you plan to ride one KTX. Compare the cost of your actual intercity tickets with the pass price. The pass becomes more interesting when you have several long-distance KORAIL trips packed into a few travel days—for example Seoul–Busan plus additional rail legs—while a simple Seoul-to-Busan one-way trip is usually better priced as an ordinary ticket.

When ordinary tickets may be better

  • You are taking only one or two short intercity rides.
  • Your itinerary includes many days without trains.
  • Your long-distance plan changes frequently and you cannot commit to pass travel days.
  • Your key route is not covered by the current pass terms.

Always compare using the official booking site at the time you buy. Rail operations and product coverage can change, and 2026 has seen broader changes in Korea’s high-speed rail services.

Starting-date and refund rules

KORAIL’s FAQ says the pass starting date can be changed once after purchase. It also says refunds should be requested before the starting date; if you already made seat reservations, cancel those reservations before refunding the pass. These details matter when your flight or Korea itinerary changes.

Is KORAIL PASS Plus a replacement for every city transit card?

It can reduce the number of cards you carry, but the transit balance is still prepaid. If your trip is mostly Seoul and you will barely use intercity trains, a local transit solution can be cheaper and simpler. Travelers spending several days in Seoul should also compare the Seoul Climate Card short-term options.
