Seoul to Busan by KTX: A First-Timer Guide

Updated: September 13, 2026.

This guide follows your first KTX journey from Seoul Station to Busan Station: finding the mainline departure hall, matching a ticket to the train and making the local transfer after arrival. If you still need to choose a station or buy a ticket, start with the route comparison or the booking guide.

Why KTX is usually the simplest choice

For most travelers staying in central Seoul, rail removes the airport transfer, security and baggage-handling steps that make a short domestic flight less attractive than it first appears. Seoul Station is directly connected to the city transit network, and Busan Station puts you in the city rather than at an outlying airport. The journey therefore works especially well when Busan is part of a multi-city Korea itinerary.

Read the ticket before leaving the hotel

Check the date, departure station, train number, departure time, carriage and seat. This walkthrough assumes your ticket says Seoul → Busan; a ticket from Suseo requires a different starting station. Keep the issued ticket available in the format required by your booking channel.

From Seoul Station entrance to your seat

  1. Aim to reach the mainline departure hall about 30 minutes before departure; allow more time with children, large bags or an unfamiliar subway/AREX transfer. This is our planning buffer, not an operator check-in deadline.
  2. Follow KTX/train-departure signs rather than entering a subway platform. Transfers inside the station take time.
  3. Match the departure board to your train number and time. Several departures can share the same destination.
  4. When the platform is announced, use its signed stairs, escalator or lift. Look for the carriage number shown on your ticket.
  5. Confirm the train number on the train display, board the correct carriage, store your luggage and find your assigned seat.

Buy food and use the restroom before going to the platform if time allows. If the platform is not yet displayed, stay near the departure board rather than guessing.

Luggage strategy

KTX is practical with normal travel luggage, but large suitcases are easier when you board early and use designated or available luggage areas before they fill. Keep passports, money, electronics and medication with you rather than leaving valuables in a suitcase away from your seat. If you are traveling during a Korean holiday period, expect trains and luggage spaces to be busier.

What the ride feels like

The trip is fast enough to function as a transfer but long enough to reset between cities. Instead of treating it as lost time, use the ride to check Busan weather, confirm your hotel route and decide which neighborhood you will explore first. Seoul and Busan reward very different rhythms; arriving with a simple first-evening plan is more useful than trying to schedule attractions from the train.

From Busan Station to your neighborhood

Leave the train with your bags and follow signs into the arrival concourse. For city rail, follow Busan Metro Line 1; this is a separate local journey from your KTX ticket.

  • Nampo and Jagalchi: take Line 1 in the Dadaepo Beach direction and choose the station closest to your hotel.
  • Seomyeon: take Line 1 in the Nopo direction.
  • Haeundae: travel to Seomyeon, then transfer to Line 2 in the Jangsan direction. Check your hotel’s nearest station before boarding.

With heavy luggage, compare that transfer with the official taxi queue. Save the Korean hotel address and check a live route for current travel time. For an arrival afternoon around the old downtown, use the Jagalchi Market guide.

A better first day in Busan

If you arrive around midday, resist the temptation to cross the entire city immediately. Drop your bags, eat nearby and explore one geographic cluster. Nampo and the old downtown work naturally from Busan Station; Haeundae and Gwangalli make more sense when your accommodation is in eastern Busan. This same geographic logic is the foundation of our Seoul, Busan and Jeju 7-day itinerary.

Common first-timer mistakes

Do not book a departure so early that reaching Seoul Station becomes stressful. Do not confuse Seoul Station with Yongsan or another rail terminal. Do not build a Busan itinerary that assumes every beach, market and hillside village is close together. And during peak travel periods, do not wait until the last moment to reserve a popular train.

Best planning rule: treat the KTX as a city-center-to-city-center transfer. Choose your train around the day you want to have on both sides of the journey, not only around the fare.
