Where to Stay in Seoul for a First Trip: Choose by Daily Route

Updated: September 13, 2026.

Choosing where to stay in Seoul is less about finding the single best neighborhood and more about deciding what you want your ordinary mornings and evenings to feel like. Seoul is enormous. A hotel that looks only a few kilometers away on a map can add transfers and walking to every day of a trip.

Start with your daily route

List the three or four areas you care about most, then choose a base that reduces repeated cross-city travel. If palaces, traditional neighborhoods and central sights dominate your plan, Jongno or central Seoul is usually more convenient than a fashionable address far south of the river. If nightlife and youth culture matter most, Hongdae changes the rhythm of the trip completely.

Myeong-dong and central Seoul

Myeong-dong works well for first-time visitors who value straightforward transport, shopping and easy access to central sights. It is busy and commercial rather than residential, but that can be an advantage when you arrive late or want food and shops close to the hotel. Nearby Euljiro and City Hall can offer a more mixed city atmosphere while remaining central.

Jongno, Insadong and the palace belt

Stay around Jongno if your ideal morning starts with walking toward a palace, hanok street or traditional district. Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Insadong and Ikseon-dong can be grouped efficiently. Our Ikseon-dong guide is useful if this slower old-Seoul atmosphere is part of your trip.

Hongdae

Hongdae is a strong base for younger travelers, K-pop fans and anyone who likes having cafes, shops and nightlife outside the hotel. Airport Railroad access is another practical advantage. The trade-off is distance from some eastern and southern Seoul attractions. If your trip centers on fan culture, compare our Hongdae K-pop guide.

Gangnam

Gangnam makes sense when your schedule is actually in Gangnam: COEX, business meetings, shopping or southern-Seoul appointments. It is not automatically the best base simply because the name is famous. Repeated trips to palaces and western Seoul can become tiring. For K-pop travelers, our COEX K-Pop Square guide shows what can be grouped nearby.

Yongsan

Yongsan is a useful transport-oriented compromise. It offers access to major rail and subway connections and can work for travelers combining Seoul with other Korean cities. It is also relevant to Hallyu visitors, but entertainment-company offices should be treated as workplaces, not attractions.

Compare bases by your daily route

Base / station to check Good fit Trade-off to check Airport rail connection
Myeong-dong / Myeongdong or Euljiro 1-ga Central sightseeing and shopping Busy streets; exact hotel entrance and station exit Transfer via Seoul Station for AREX
Jongno / Anguk or Jongno 3-ga Palaces, Insadong and hanok lanes Evening noise near dining streets; lift access with luggage Subway transfer to AREX or a suitable airport bus
Hongdae / Hongik University Music, cafes and late evenings Nightlife noise; long station exits Direct AREX All-Stop service
Gangnam / Samseong or Gangnam COEX or a schedule south of the river Different stations serve different parts of this large area Subway transfers or a direct airport-bus route
Yongsan / Yongsan or Sinyongsan Rail connections and a central-south base Large roads and the exact walk to the relevant terminal Transfer via Seoul Station for AREX

These are areas to compare, not hotel endorsements. Use the airport-transfer guide to check the first and last journey, then inspect the hotel’s actual walking route.

What matters more than the neighborhood name

Check the actual walking route from the hotel to the station, not just the stated distance. Seoul has hills, large intersections and station complexes where a short map distance can feel longer with luggage. Also check whether the station serves the line you will repeatedly use. One transfer saved twice a day is more valuable than a slightly prettier lobby.

Airport arrival and departure

If you land late or leave early, airport access deserves extra weight. Hongdae and Seoul Station are useful for Airport Railroad connections, while other districts may require transfers, buses or taxis. Do not choose an airport-night hotel based solely on sightseeing convenience.

Common booking mistakes

Do not book a hotel because an influencer stayed there without checking your own route. Do not assume every address labeled ‘Gangnam’ or ‘Hongdae’ is next to the station. Read recent reviews for noise, elevator access and room size. And if you travel with large luggage, check whether the nearest station exit has an elevator.

Simple rule: choose the hotel that makes your first and last journey of each day easier. Seoul is more enjoyable when you spend evenings in your neighborhood instead of making one final 50-minute transfer.
