Korea’s electronic travel authorization rules can be confusing because some visa-free travelers normally need K-ETA while certain countries and regions are under a temporary exemption. The official K-ETA website states that the current temporary exemption has been extended through December 31, 2026 (KST).
Who does the extension cover?
The extension covers the countries and regions already included in the temporary exemption. To check your passport, start on the official K-ETA website and enter your nationality and passport information in the application process. The government notice says an exemption message appears for eligible travelers when they scan their passport information page. Check the result before paying; visa-free eligibility and K-ETA exemption are separate questions.
Can an exempt traveler still apply?
Yes. The official notice says travelers covered by the temporary exemption may still apply for K-ETA if they want the benefits that come with an approved authorization, including not having to submit an arrival card. The normal K-ETA application fee applies, and the fee is non-refundable.
What if you already have K-ETA?
An existing valid K-ETA can continue to be used until its expiration date. You do not need to apply again simply because the temporary-exemption period was extended.
Do not use look-alike websites
Use the official Korean government K-ETA domain. Third-party sites may charge additional service fees or create confusion about eligibility. Before paying, confirm that you are on the government website.
Arrival card: the step exempt travelers still need to check
If you use the temporary exemption and do not hold a valid K-ETA, you are generally subject to Korea’s arrival declaration. Submit a free e-Arrival Card through the government portal within the portal’s permitted three-day window. The official FAQ counts the arrival date and the two preceding calendar days in Korean Standard Time; submit before going through immigration. Prepare your passport, valid email address, arrival date and flight number, and accommodation details.
Visa-free visitors entering with a valid K-ETA are excluded from the arrival-card requirement. Other exclusions, including registered foreign residents, are listed in the official declaration eligibility guide. Travelers entering on a visa should follow that guide even if they also hold K-ETA.
Before departure
- Confirm passport nationality, visa-free eligibility and the K-ETA result on the official site.
- Check your existing authorization’s expiry and the information recorded against your passport.
- Complete the arrival declaration if it applies to you.
- For arrivals after December 31, 2026 KST, look for a newer exemption notice.
