Some K-drama locations are memorable because they are glamorous. The village tree from Extraordinary Attorney Woo is memorable for the opposite reason. It is quiet, rooted in a real community, and powerful enough to make an ordinary rural landscape feel unforgettable.
The Tree Fans Remember
The Korea Tourism Organization identifies the Dongbu Village hackberry tree in Changwon as the real filming location for the village-tree storyline in Extraordinary Attorney Woo. The tree is estimated to be around 500 years old and became widely known after the episode aired.
Its appeal is immediate. The broad canopy spreads over a low rural landscape, and the scene feels far removed from Seoul’s polished city imagery. Even without the drama connection, the tree is worth approaching slowly.
Why the Location Works
Television can make a place famous, but it cannot manufacture the sense of scale you feel standing beneath an old tree. The branches fill your view, the surrounding fields remain quiet, and the village atmosphere encourages a much slower pace than a typical sightseeing day.
The best filming locations do not feel like sets. They feel like places with lives before and after the camera arrived.
Make It Part of a Changwon Day
The KTO course names Bansong Market (반송시장), Gyeongnam Art Museum (경남도립미술관) and Changwon Arboretum (창원수목원) alongside the tree. These form a city-wide trip requiring transport between districts, not one village walk. A useful plan is the tree in daylight → a market meal → either the museum or the arboretum, depending on current opening and weather. Choose one final attraction rather than trying to finish the full course.
For a rail arrival, compare trains to Changwon Jungang Station (창원중앙역) using the KTX booking guide, then arrange a taxi or car for the rural leg. The city lists the tree at 102-1 Bukbu-ri, Daesan-myeon, Uichang-gu, Changwon (창원시 의창구 대산면 북부리 102-1); search 동부마을 팽나무 with that address. Use public village paths, follow signs around the tree and arrange the pickup before leaving the car. Budget half an hour at the tree and at least half a day for the local outing, plus intercity travel; use live journey estimates for the transfers rather than treating these visit allowances as driving times. Bus-only visitors should confirm the rural return connection first and omit the extra attraction if connections are poor.
That approach also reduces pressure on the village itself. You see the location, respect the residents, then continue exploring the region rather than lingering in one small residential area.
If your trip also includes Jeju, the Attorney Woo Jeju guide covers the coastal and temple locations from the later episodes; they belong on a separate island itinerary.
Photography and Etiquette
Wide shots usually work better than close-up recreations here. Give the tree space in the frame, include the landscape around it, and avoid photographing residents without permission. Early morning or late afternoon light can make the branches and fields look especially soft.
