Seoul to Gyeongju: KTX vs Bus & Transfers

Traveling from Seoul to Gyeongju is one of the easiest ways to add ancient Korean history to a first trip beyond the capital. Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla kingdom, and its tombs, temples, observatory and historic districts make the city feel very different from Seoul.

Updated: September 13, 2026.

For most international visitors, the KTX is the quickest way to reach Gyeongju from Seoul, but Gyeongju Station is outside the historic centre. Compare the onward journey to Hwangnidan-gil, not just the train time. A long-distance bus can work better if its terminal is closer to your hotel or train seats are unavailable; always check current times with the operators.

Quick recommendation: Choose KTX if time matters. Choose a long-distance bus when its departure terminal is more convenient or train seats are limited. Remember that arriving at Gyeongju rail station is only the first part of the journey; you still need a local transfer to the historic center.

Seoul to Gyeongju by KTX

Korea Tourism Organization describes Gyeongju as accessible on the Gyeongbu high-speed rail corridor. Its Gyeongju destination guide gives an approximate KTX journey of around two hours from Seoul Station to Gyeongju Station, although exact journey times depend on the service and timetable.

For a first-time visitor, Seoul Station is usually the most straightforward departure point because it connects with several Seoul transit lines and the Airport Railroad. Reserve your train before a busy weekend or holiday rather than assuming seats will remain available.

How to book the train

Book through the official KORAIL website, KORAIL+ or a supported station channel. Use the current booking service rather than an old KorailTalk/SRT app guide; verify the exact departure and arrival stations.

Getting from Gyeongju Station to the historic center

The KTX station is Gyeongju Station (경주역), formerly Singyeongju, outside the historic center. Do not navigate to the old downtown station site. For Hwangnidan-gil, the city’s official walking map lists routes including 50, 51, 60, 61 and 70 for Seorabeol Sageori (서라벌사거리), followed by about an eight-minute walk. The same map also shows 710/711 serving Cheonmachong Back Gate–Hwangnidan-gil (천마총후문·황리단길). Choose the stop shown for the actual departure you board rather than assuming every listed route has the same nearest stop.

  1. At the station, search 경주역 → 서라벌사거리 in the city’s live bus information or a current Korean map.
  2. Match the bus direction and that departure’s stop list before boarding; branches and late services can differ.
  3. For a taxi, show the actual hotel address or 황리단길, not just “Gyeongju center.”
  4. Before the return journey, confirm that the bus reaches the KTX station. Leave a separate margin for waiting and the walk to your rail platform.

Reserve roughly an hour in your arrival plan for finding transport, waiting and reaching the central area. This is a suggested planning allowance, not a guaranteed bus or taxi running time. If the live route is longer, adjust the first attraction accordingly.

Seoul to Gyeongju by bus

Long-distance buses are a useful alternative. They can be attractive when the relevant Seoul terminal is closer to your hotel or when KTX seats are unavailable. The trade-off is that road travel is more exposed to congestion, especially on weekends and national holidays.

Check whether you are booking an express bus or intercity bus and confirm the exact departure and arrival terminals. KTO 2026 international transportation guidance says express and intercity bus tickets are available through supported ticket machines and counters, and lists online booking options for international visitors.

KTX or bus: which should you choose?

Choose KTX if you want the most predictable journey and are connecting Gyeongju with Seoul or Busan on a multi-city itinerary. The train is especially valuable on a short Korea trip because it preserves sightseeing time.

Choose the bus if terminal location works better, train seats are sold out, or a bus departure fits your schedule more naturally. Compare the full door-to-door trip rather than only the advertised train or bus duration.

Can you visit Gyeongju as a day trip from Seoul?

It is possible, but an overnight stay is usually a better travel experience. Even with a roughly two-hour KTX ride, you need time to reach Seoul Station, transfer from Gyeongju Station, move between attractions and return for your train.

A day trip works best if you choose a small number of central sights. Trying to combine the historic center, Bulguksa Temple and several outlying attractions in one rushed day can turn a cultural trip into a transport exercise.

A practical first-day route

After checking in, concentrate on the central historic area. Daereungwon Ancient Tomb Complex, Cheomseongdae and Woljeonggyo Bridge can form a natural sequence, with Hwangnidan-gil providing cafes and restaurants nearby. KTO Gyeongju travel material highlights these historic attractions as part of the city core visitor experience.

If you have a second day, use it for sites farther from the center, such as Bulguksa, rather than repeatedly crossing the city on your arrival day.

What changes if you continue to Busan?

Gyeongju fits naturally between Seoul and Busan. This makes a Seoul-Gyeongju-Busan route more efficient than returning to Seoul after Gyeongju.

Rail connectivity on Korea southeast and east coast has also improved. KTO reports that the full Donghae Line KTX-Eum began operating on December 30, 2025. The route includes Gyeongju and connects onward through cities including Pohang, Uljin and Gangneung.

For the reservation itself use the KTX booking guide; for a two-base itinerary use planning beyond Seoul.

Useful travel tips

  • Reserve KTX early for busy weekends and Korean holiday periods.
  • Check the exact station or terminal before paying.
  • Allow time for the local transfer after arriving in Gyeongju.
  • Keep a Tmoney card for local buses and ordinary public transportation.
  • Use NAVER Map or Kakao Map for Korean public-transit routing.
  • If continuing south, consider Gyeongju as a stop between Seoul and Busan instead of a round trip.

Build a missed-connection buffer into both directions. On the outbound journey, a late arrival at Seoul Station can cost the reserved train; on the return journey, local traffic or a long bus wait can make a tight Gyeongju departure unrealistic. Keep the KORAIL booking reference, the Korean station name 경주역 and your accommodation address available offline. If you are traveling with luggage, compare station lockers or hotel storage before committing to a day trip, because carrying bags through Daereungwon and Hwangnidan-gil reduces the time saved by using KTX.

Bottom line

For most travelers, KTX is the best way from Seoul to Gyeongju: it is fast, predictable and easy to integrate into a Seoul-Gyeongju-Busan itinerary. The bus remains a useful alternative when its terminal or departure time is more convenient.

The most important planning detail is the final transfer. Do not treat the arrival station as if it were the historic center. Once you include that local leg, you can build a realistic Gyeongju itinerary instead of losing sightseeing time to unexpected transportation.
